Congratulations to Sudipto Banerjee for being elected a Fellow in the Institute of Mathematical Statistics

Congratulations to Sudipto Banerjee for being elected a Fellow in the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. Fellowship is a way of honoring the outstanding research and professional contributions of members, contributions which help keep IMS in a leading role in the field of statistics and probability. Each newly elected Fellow will be welcomed and presented with a plaque during the IMS Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony at 8:00pm, Monday, August 10, 2015 during the Joint Statistical Meetings/IMS Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington, USA. http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2015/

Congratulations to Sudipto Banerjee for being awarded a Distinguished Achievement Medal by the American Statistical Association

Congratulations to Sudipto Banerjee for being awarded a Distinguished Achievement Medal for 2015 by the Section on Statistics and the Environment (ENVR) of the American Statistical Association for his many outstanding contributions to environmental statistics. The award will be formally presented at the annual ENVR mixer at the 2015 JSM in Seattle. It is being presented to Dr. Banerjee for outstanding contributions to the hierarchical modeling of complex spatial and spatio-temporal data, with applications in environmental exposure, environmental health, and forestry; for leadership in teaching and mentoring students; and for service to the profession.

Catherine Sugar elected 2015 Fellow of ASA and President of Southern California Chapter of ASA

Congratulations to Catherine Sugar for being elected a 2015 Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA). This is one of the highest recognitions in our profession conferred by our flagship association and it is a truly remarkable achievement. She will be officially conferred this fellowship in a ceremony in the upcoming Joint Statistical Meetings in Seattle, WA, on the evening of Tuesday, August 11, 2015. As of January 2015, she has also taken on the role of President of the Southern California Chapter of the ASA.

Ron Brookmeyer to receive the 2015 Nathan Mantel Lifetime Achievement Award from ASA's Section on Statistics in Epidemiology

Congratulations to Ron Brookmeyer for being chosen to receive the 2015 Nathan Mantel Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Statistical Association for his valuable lifetime contributions at the intersection of statistical science and epidemiology. The section will celebrate Dr. Brookmeyer at a reception and award ceremony at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Seattle, WA, in August 2015

Congratulations to Christina Ramirez for receiving an invitation for an oral presentation at the International AIDS Society Towards an HIV Cure Symposium 2015

Congratulations to Christina Ramirez for receiving an invitation for an oral presentation at the International AIDS Society Towards an HIV Cure Symposium 2015. This is a prestigious recognition of her new and successful algorithm called Fuzzy Forests for analyzing HIV cure data. Among all abstracts received from international research groups worldwide, only a few are typically selected for poster presentation at this meeting, and still fewer are selected for an oral presentation. Christina's abstract is statistics-heavy and so its selection for an oral presentation is highly remarkable and shows how valuable her algorithm is, as perceived by the selection committee.

Congratulations to Heidi Fischer for receiving the JSM-2015 SBSS student travel award

Congratulations to Heidi Fischer for receiving the JSM-2015 SBSS student travel award. Heidi was recognized by the Section on Bayesian Statistical Science for her manuscript 'Statistical Methods for Time Series of Ultrafine Particle Distributions'.

Job Opening for Open-Rank Professor of Biostatistics at UCLA

The Department of Biostatistics at the UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health is searching for an open-rank, tenure-track or tenured professor to join our faculty (http://www.biostat.ucla.edu). The department encourages applications from outstanding candidates who are committed to education and engaging in cutting-edge research involving methodological approaches and practical solutions to confront the challenges of complex data structures in public health, with a focus on Big Data and its applications to diverse scientific problems.

Opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration are abundant and encouraged, both within and outside the health sciences. The Fielding School of Public Health is located on the main UCLA campus, in direct proximity to the other health sciences schools (Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing) and the College of Letters and Science. The UCLA community has a strong history of and commitment to interdisciplinary research and collaboration, not only with other health sciences, but also with faculty in Public Affairs, Education and Law. Beyond the Department of Biostatistics, UCLA has many other world-class statisticians, not only in the Department of Statistics, but also faculty members in departments such as Medicine, Biomathematics, Human Genetics, Psychiatry and Psychology.

Candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent in statistics, biostatistics or a comparable data science field by the date of appointment, as well as a demonstrated commitment to public health. Candidates should provide, depending on their level of experience, either potential for or evidence of scholarly impact through publications, excellence in teaching, and ability to obtain extramural funding, as well as strong oral and written communication skills. Faculty appointment level and salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

To apply: submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, contact information for three references, a statement of research interests and goals, a teaching statement and one or two manuscripts or articles representing your most important work to the Chair, Faculty Search Committee using the link:
